There are many other buildings on Hewitt that are historical of course, one of which is where my office located. This second picture is of the Commerce building at 1801 Hewitt Ave, circa 1910. Originally, it was built to be office with stores below it as it is being used today. However, from 1993 after being vacant for quite some time, it was converted to studio housing. The Commerce building has a beauty to its architecture, with sunset backgrounds at times with it sitting on the NW corner of Hewitt and Rockefeller Ave one block away from the Snohomish County Superior Court.
Lucas authentic Italian restaurant (top of page) is all that remains of the Riley Block (1712 Hewitt 1911). I cannot find anything else on this building, but I know it used be a very popular night club named Jimmy Z's back in the 1990s. This building sits between Rockefeller Street and Wetmore Avenue on Hewitt Ave near the Snohomish County Courthouse. As facts become known, we will update this page. See below about the photographer JB that will be updating our site with his photo art.
Hewitt Avenue and Oakes Avenue Manila Hotel
The Manila Hotel used to be located on the corner of Hewitt Ave and Oakes Ave on the SW corner. Although a wonderful building, it was lost to a fire in 2012, and a life was lost in the process. Currently, it is an empty cleared lot. I wondered why there was nothing there, well that is the why. Although I grew up here, it is hard to remember what used to be located in may places, especially Hewitt or Colby. I remember the piles of bricks when they were tearing down these historic buildings, but simply cannot remember what was there.
Hewitt and Lombard Avenues' Historic Mitchell Hotel
Built in 1903, the Mitchell Hotel was designed for luxury. However, the hotel was converted to apartments by about 1920, being renamed to Cascadian Apartments. Children in the area considered this a haunted building. The Mitchell family also built the smaller building across the alley from the hotel which is now a luxury coffee shop and cafe named Kel's Cafe. Both Kel's and the Cascadian are on Hewitt Avenue between Lombard Avenue and Oakes Avenue. This hotel has a Hewitt Avenue address, but is located on the corner of Lombard Avenue.
The Evergreen Building built in 1902 is currently Kel's Cafe, which is about to open this February of 2025. They will serve food and luxury coffee on the first floor. Most people are unaware of the bottomed basement floor. There are currently small apartments above the restaurant. Originally, this building had stores below with offices above.
Jon Bradshaw Photographer Everett
This page will have many more pictures on it shot by JB than other pages because of the historical nature of this street. There are many building and other structures that are either on this street or are viewable from this state that give incredible one of a kind views of history while the sun is setting or rising. Hewitt is color and beautiful full of many historical landmarks.
Hopefully when Jon is working, the weather will provide him the opportunity of the type of sunset and sunrise views for him to capture. Combined with his artistic flair and individual style, this will combine for an astonishing set of photos to share with users of this site as well as JB enthusiasts. Working with JB has been a complete joy in this collaboration.
Hewitt Ave is already an artistic work of art with many people through history and owners of store and business fronts now have collaborated unknowingly with people of the past to create a vibrant historical renovation of Hewitt Ave. Many people do not realize with out walking at the right time of year and the right times of day just how beautiful this street and its views are. We have asked JB to capture that for us in his photos.
As you can see from the pictures we are currently using on this page, the white and red brick faced historical buildings are plentiful on this street. As a result, they make for great opportunity for JB to catch early morning and early evening shots that can be stunning. I cannot wait until JB provides us with the photos that will also have his individual artistic flare. I am hoping that JB can shoot some snow covered days in addition to the rising and setting sun photos. All at one time would be fantastic.
