There are many other buildings on Hewitt that are historical of course, one of which is where my office located. This second picture is of the Commerce building at 1801 Hewitt Ave, circa 1910. Originally, it was built to be office with stores below it as it is being used today. However, from 1993 after being vacant for quite some time, it was converted to studio housing. The Commerce building has a beauty to its architecture, with sunset backgrounds at times with it sitting on the NW corner of Hewitt and Rockefeller Ave one block away from the Snohomish County Superior Court.
Lucas authentic Italian restaurant (top of page) is all that remains of the Riley Block (1712 Hewitt 1911). I cannot find anything else on this building, but I know it used be a very popular night club named Jimmy Z's back in the 1990s. This building sits between Rockefeller Street and Wetmore Avenue on Hewitt Ave near the Snohomish County Courthouse. As facts become known, we will update this page. See below about the photographer JB that will be updating our site with his photo art.
Hewitt Avenue and Oakes Avenue Manila Hotel
The Manila Hotel once graced the corner of Hewitt Avenue and Oakes Avenue, proudly standing as a beacon of history and charm on the southwest corner. With its elegantly designed façade and inviting atmosphere, the Manila Hotel was not merely a building; it was a vibrant gathering place that welcomed locals and travelers alike, offering an experience steeped in hospitality and warmth. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the soft murmur of laughter filled its hallways, creating a sense of community that enveloped all who stepped through its doors. Unfortunately, this wonderful establishment met a tragic fate in 2012 when a devastating fire broke out, claiming not only the structure but also a life in the process. The aftermath left a gaping void in the neighborhood; once bustling with life and exuberance, this corner now stands as an empty, cleared lot, a stark reminder of what once was.
As I reflect on the changes that have taken place in our beloved city, I often find myself wondering why such a significant space now remains barren and silent. Growing up in this vibrant community, I have witnessed the ebb and flow of time and progress, yet certain places evoke a peculiar sense of nostalgia. The footprints of history linger in my memory, but they often fade, replaced by the relentless march of new developments. It is especially challenging to recall the intricate stories that once unfolded on streets like Hewitt and Colby, overlaid with the echoes of laughter and the sounds of bustling life. I remember seeing the piles of bricks and debris during the demolition of these historic buildings, but the vivid details of what stood there are elusive, like wisps of smoke dissipating into the air. Each time I pass by that empty lot where the Manila Hotel once stood, I am reminded of the fragility of history and the stories we risk losing if we do not cherish our past. In that emptiness, I sense a call to remember and honor what once was, to carry forth the legacy of the Manila Hotel and the countless memories intertwined with its walls.
Hewitt and Lombard Avenues' Historic Mitchell Hotel
Built in 1903, the Mitchell Hotel was the epitome of luxury during its prime, a grand establishment that welcomed guests with opulent decor and a promise of elegance. As the years passed, however, the bustling hotel underwent a transformation around 1920, evolving from a haven of hospitality into a set of apartments and rebranding itself as the Cascadian Apartments. This change marked a significant shift in the building's purpose, but whispers of its storied past lingered in the air. Local children often spoke of the Cascadian as a haunted house, spinning tales of its ghostly resident from a different era. The Mitchell family, not content to rest on their laurels, also constructed a smaller building across the alley—a charming structure that now houses Kel's Cafe, a luxurious coffee shop and eatery that has quickly become a beloved local spot. Both Kel's Cafe and the Cascadian are situated on Hewitt Avenue, nestled perfectly between Lombard Avenue and Oakes Avenue. Although the hotel maintains a Hewitt Avenue address, it proudly stands at the lively corner of Lombard Avenue, continuing to attract those who are fascinated by its history and charm.
Just a stone's throw away, the Evergreen Building, constructed in 1902, is now setting the stage for a delightful culinary experience as it prepares to open Kel's Cafe this upcoming February of 2025. This vibrant establishment promises to serve food and luxury coffee on its first floor, inviting patrons to indulge in a carefully curated menu while basking in the café's rich historical ambiance. However, what most people don’t realize is that the Evergreen Building has even more secrets hidden away; beneath the bustling café lies a basement that has remained relatively unknown, adding an air of mystery to the venue. Rumor has it that this lower level once housed a variety of storefronts, creating a bustling retail scene, while the upper floors were home to offices that catered to the needs of local businesses. Today, small apartments can be found above the café, preserving the building's original intent of hosting both commercial and residential spaces. As Kel's Cafe prepares for its grand opening, it not only breathes new life into the Evergreen Building but also serves as a bridge connecting the rich history of Everett to the vibrant community of today, allowing guests to savor a taste of the past while enjoying contemporary comforts.
